Happy Voter Registration Day!
National Voter Registration Day is a bipartisan holiday celebrated every September that seeks to mobilize people to register to vote or encourage others to do so. While the holiday encourages vast participation across all demographics, efforts are typically centered around registering young people who have just come to be of voting age. Organizations and local volunteers are crucial in registering several new young voters nationwide. However, in recent years, public figures have been vital in directing their large followings to get people out and vote via social media. This year, there has been a huge uptick of celebrities coming out and directing their followers to websites they can use to register or check their voter registration, the most popular website being Vote.org. CEO of Vote.org, Andrea Hailey, has already come out to celebrate the large amount of traffic her website has received in a recent Instagram story:
USA Today has reported that over 100 celebrities have linked resources for followers to check or confirm their voter status. Many of these celebrities have also come out to endorse candidates today, including Billie Eilish and her brother FINNEAS, who came out in support of VP Kamala Harris. The two siblings have joined the already large list of celebrities coming out with their endorsements. ABC News reports, YouTuber and podcaster Tana Mongeau spoke about how a certain candidate's team offered her a large sum of money if she publicly showed her endorsement for the candidate. It is clear from the experience of Mongeau and all the buzz around celebrity endorsements that they have become very valuable political playing tools to show a candidate's credibility and likability. If you have scrolled any time on social media, you have likely already seen a celebrity or politically active friend/colleague implore you to register to vote. However if you have not, please do! If you have registered previously, make sure you check your voter status. I have attached some helpful links below!

This seems like a great initiative to have celebrities helping out for the cause. Many people, especially the young generation, they look up to celebrities; so it is excellent to use the influence of the celebrity to gain the attention of some new voters.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is important to our generation, and it's used on a daily basis. Using social media platforms, technology and internet to campaign and encourage others to vote was a smart move. Social media has allowed influencers to become role models or mentors for people via the internet. Or it could just be someone that you find cool or interesting and you like watching their content. When kids see their favorite celebrities or influencers encouraging others to vote and learn about the upcoming election, it will make them want to vote as well too. Alot of people get their news from social media platforms, so having influencers encourage and spread accurate news can be helpful.
