The Gender Gap Between Gen Z Voters: How The News Media is Responding
After a long and contentious election, America finally declared the winner of who would be the next president of the United States. Americans have met the news with mixed reactions, many wondering how a figure as controversial as Donald Trump can get re-elected. The media has largely credited Trump's sweeping win to male members of Generation Z as they showed their support in record-breaking numbers (Potas). This trend is largely consistent with that of the rising gender gap between how young men and women vote. While the press initially projected that Gen Z would win the vote of Vice President Kamala Harris, many journalists and political analysts were surprised to discover that young men helped flip the presidency and Senate (Penley). Young Gen Z men have voiced that they supported Trump because of his strong presence and consistent message, often highlighting the failures of the Joe Biden administration to contrast Trump's supposed superiority and strength. Meanwhile, Gen Z women favored Kamala Harris, citing reproductive rights, climate change, and gun control as major factors in deciding their vote (Miller).
The gender gap does not seem to be as pronounced as it was in the past in the 2020 election, with Trump winning more votes from young women than he did during his last run (Sherman). So, how and why did Trump perform better with Gen Z voters? He has greatly benefitted from the press he has received to promote his platform, both in mainstream news channels and web-native platforms. By allowing Trump to speak on his massively popular podcast, Joe Rogan gave Trump a huge platform to reach young men. Many Gen Z men credit this interview as a major driving force in how they ultimately chose to vote. The mainstream news has also had plenty for which to speak about Trump, given his incredibly eventful presidential run. However, the Trump campaign has consistently made these news events reflect well on him by spinning them to make him appear a strong, capable leader. As we have discussed in this week's module, Trump found a narrative that was simple, consistent, and adequately targeted. Trump's campaign will be one to study, as he seemingly overcame the many projections that named Harris the winner of the 2024 presidential race.

ReplyDeleteI find it crazy how many Gen Z voted for Trump. 4 out of 10 young people voted Trump over Kamala. Of course that does not sound as impressive. But the men who were 18-29 had a good turnout. Young white males made an 11% point shift, young Black men had a 20 % point shift toward Republicans. Also young Latino men saw a 13% point change from 2020.

It was disappointing to see that Ben Z even had consideration for voting for a felon who has proven many times that his intentions when making policy is to benefit himself and that he doesn't really care for the people. Many of his claims when persuading people for there vote mostly stemmed my racism and propaganda in my opinion.
